Watch: Divers Stumble Upon Multiple Anti-Aircraft Shells Off Coast Of Malta
A dive off Malta’s southern coast quickly turned extra adventurous when two divers stumbled upon a number of anti-aircraft shells
Two divers, @alvaro23burgos and @vipalmhe have been living in Malta for more than three years and frequently upload stunning videos from their adventures and dives around the island.
“We love exploring every corner and usually try to get out of the touristy areas,” Álvaro told Lovin Malta. But while snorkelling a couple of weeks ago, something caught their attention from above… and it turned out to be unlike anything they had ever seen.
Lying some eight metres underwater off the coast of Bengħajsa were “several large shells or bullets, possibly from an aeroplane and most likely from the Second World War.”
Caught in the adrenaline of the moment, they dove down to retrieve one.
“Each one weighed about 10 kilos, which is why it was so hard to get it out,” the diver continued. In fact, footage sent to Lovin Malta shows how they actually struggled to bring the old shells to the surface.
Eventually, the two divers contacted the Armed Forces of Malta, who joined them on a trip to search, analyse and extract the explosives. By the end of the operation, besides the seven shells discovered by the two divers, the AFM found a total of 20 anti-aircraft shells in the vicinity.
“They told us they take them to a strategic place far away from Gozo where they deposit all of this kind of ammunition,” González finished.
