Watch: Diversify Or Die – Paola Priest’s Stark Warning About Future Of Big Churches

Amidst controversy over the Paola parish church’s plans to open a rooftop cafeteria, parish priest Fr Marc Andre Camilleri has issued a stark warning over the warning of big churches.
“Unless we diversify and find ways of maintaining our big churches, we will have to close down at some point because we cannot keep them,” Fr Camilleri told Lovin Malta.
He stressed that the church requires money for regular maintenance works and bills.
“When someone comes to do the painting or the waterproofing or if I get an electricity bill, should I just tell them they’re blessed and thats it? I have to pay. We live in a society where you have to pay.”

“These workers have families too, they’re doing their job and they deserve to be paid because that is justice. I don’t think the Lord has ever condemned anybody who’s making a decent living.”
The cafeteria is part of a plan to utilise 12 rooms in the Paola church’s belfry towers that are currently unused and falling into disrepair.
Other rooms will be converted into an interpretation centre, museums, and Catechism classrooms.
“I want to make the point that this is much bigger than just a cafeteria; the cafeteria is just a small fraction of a much larger project,” Fr Camilleri said.
Will you visit this cafeteria if it opens?
