Watch: ‘Don’t Stop At White Rocks’: Mellieħa Mayor Urges Abela To Protect His Town’s Green Spaces
After the government announced that White Rocks will be turned into a national park, Mellieħa mayor Gabriel Micallef said the same approach should be taken for green areas in his town that are earmarked for development.
“The transformation of White Rocks into a national park is a courageous step which shows that everything is possible with the right political will,” Micallef said. “But what about Mellieħa?”
He said the Mellieħa local council have long been asking Prime Minister Robert Abela to halt the massive development projects that have been proposed at Mellieħa Heights and Żnuber.
“So far, there has been no response, no action, and no sense of justice,” he said.
“We’ve been fighting the proposed Mellieħa Heights development for years – a project that would completely alter the character of our locality.
“Now the Żnuber area is at risk of being lost as well for the convenience of people with influence.”
Micallef said that if Abela “found the courage” to save White Rocks and Manoel Island from development, he can do the same for those two sites in Mellieħa.
“If you truly believe in the environment, communities and sustainable development, then these principles should apply across the board and not simply on issues that might be politically convenient,” he said.
“The people of Mellieħa are tired of being ignored and the government shouldn’t allow localities like ours to remain at the bottom of the list.”
