Watch: Empty Rhetoric To Get A Few Likes, Sandra Gauci Says Of PN’s Deportation Cry

ADPD deputy leader Sandra Gauci has broken down why she believes the PN’s recent tough stance on the deportation of foreign criminals is nothing but empty rhetoric for the sake of a brief period of social media popularity.

“Let’s not let emotion get the better of us and profit off public anger, that is justifiable to a point, like the PN is doing,” Gauci said of PN MP Joe Giglio’s recent six proposals to improve national security.

“When I read the news, I thought at first that it must have been an influencer like Ben Camille who just said ‘let’s deport the foreigners’… but then I saw that it was actually a proposal by Joe Giglio.”

One of Giglio’s proposals says that foreigners who break the law should be “immediately deported and shouldn’t be allowed to re-enter Malta” and accused Identity Malta of being “asleep” on this issue.

He didn’t explain which laws this punishment should apply to.

Gauci pointed out that the Maltese Criminal Code already caters for the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of major crimes and said the real problem is that the law isn’t being enforced enough.

“The law is there, the problem is that people aren’t following the law. The laws have become mere words on paper that no one cares about,” she warned.

“Laws on deportation already exist but for major crimes, but not for things like petty theft and not dependent on their skin colour. [Giglio] is just after a few minutes of hype but he’s being ridiculous because all we want is a system and institutions that works.”

“He pretends that he’s proposing something extraordinary but the problem is that the laws aren’t being enforced, which is why people are angry.”

Gauci also dismissed Giglio’s call for the army to play an active role in law enforcement as a proposal “worthy of North Korea”.

“Soldiers aren’t boy scouts and should only be used for national crises, not a fight of 20 people in Ħamrun. That fight shows how few police officers are stationed in Ħamrun, which is a problem the whole country is facing.”

“How can the PN accuse PL of turning Malta into North Korea but then come up with such a proposal?”
