Watch: Enemalta Head Admits Malta Developed Beyond Their Means
Enemalta’s executive chairperson Ryan Fava admitted that the rate of development in Malta in recent years outpaced investment in the national grid.
Following another summer of power cuts, Fava was interviewed on Jon Mallia’s Il-Podcast ta’ Jon and was repeatedly asked whether the development of Malta in recent years was sustainable.
Fava said that the economy grew at an “alarming” rate but stopped short of saying the growth was unsustainable.
“Enemalta ended up in a situation where one can say that its own development wasn’t keeping up with the country’s development,” he said.
“That’s why the government’s €55 million injection in Enemalta was necessary. Enemalta was only breaking even, but this injection was one of our biggest investments ever.”
Fava said that the upgrade to the electricity grid that took place in recent months was originally supposed to take over a span of six years but had to be escalated to a matter of months due to critical concerns.
