Watch: Engerer – Muscat Ordered Me Not To Attend Caruana Galizia Vigil On Day She Was Killed
Former PL MEP Cyrus Engerer said that former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat “ordered” him not to attend a vigil for Daphne Caruana Galizia on the day she was assassinated.
Engerer was one of few PL officials who attended a vigil on 16th October 2017 and he has now said on Jon Mallia’s debate show Il-Każin that he did so against the Prime Minister’s orders.
“I couldn’t care less about that order. In my view, this was a terrorist attack against Maltese journalists and all those who treasure free expression and a way to pressure us to stop saying what we believe in.”
Engerer said that while Muscat didn’t issue some kind of blanket order to PL politicians, the former Prime Minister made his position clear when he told him he intended to attend the vigil.
“We told him we were going and he told us not to go,” he said.
Despite this, Engerer went on to issue a public defence of Muscat’s handling of the Caruana Galizia murder two days later.
“No words can describe how greatly Joseph Muscat will be missed the day he leaves politics,” Engerer said back then. “Even in the most difficult of situations for Malta, he manages to rise above and be the statesman that he is – whilst remaining humble and honest. Proud of our Prime Minister.”
Engerer has since left PL politics and is now part of an emerging political group called Il-Progressivi that is set to launch later this month.
