Watch: First Close-Up Look At Gozo’s Newest Dive Site, The Formerly Shipwrecked Hephaestus
Around 40 metres underwater just off the coast of Gozo’s Xatt L-Aħmar, the 60-metre oil tanker Hephaestus was yesterday scuttled to create a new diving attraction for the islands… and the first images from the site are otherworldly.
In new footage from the brand new site, divers have revealed what the former oil tanker now looks like scuttled beneath Gozitan waves.

The large tanker had run aground in Qawra four years ago, during a freak storm on 10th February 2018, coincidentally on the same day Malta celebrates the Shipwreck of St Paul.
Now at its final resting place further up north, the Hephaestus has already attracted a large number of divers to its sprawling deck and intricate inside, and is sure to become one of the islands’ favourite diving spots.
