Watch: ‘Foreigners Made You A Sinjur Żgħir’ – Muscat To Maltese Landlord
Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat used a personal experience to call out people who complain about foreign workers while simultaneously benefiting financially from their presence in Malta.
“Complaining about foreigners has become too popular,” Muscat said on ONE TV’s Xtra. “It’s fair enough when people grumble proportionately, but someone I know recently complained to me about foreigners how and I couldn’t hold it in.”
“I asked him how many of his four apartments are rented to Maltese tenants and he said that they are practically all foreigners. So he was complaining about foreigners when they made him a sinjur żgħir (someone with a small fortune).”
Muscat also argued that the government increased pensions thanks to the NI contributions paid by foreign workers.
“A recent PQ showed that foreign workers paid €2 billion in NI alone over the past ten years, but many of them won’t get a pension since they don’t stay in Malta for long. So this money was used to increase the pensions of Maltese nationals.”
He also said that PN leader Alex Borg’s proposal for a four-day work week would only be feasible if 50,000 foreign workers are brought in to compensate for the lost hours.
