Watch: Franco Debono – First Priority For New PN Leader Must Be Filing Party Accounts

Franco Debono said that the new PN leader must prioritise filing the party’s accounts.

“First of all, the new leader must file the party’s financial return,” Debono said in a new interview with Lovin Malta’s Tim Diacono.

“I was the person who had drafted and pushed forward a party financing law as an MP.  I used to follow Italian politics as a university student and it was a big issue back then.”

“The first thing that a new leader must do is regularise the party in terms of its financial obligations. If a new leader comes in without a plan on how to tackle this, I think it would be a non-starter.”

The PN hasn’t filed its accounts since 2020, with outgoing leader Bernard Grech repeatedly attributing the delay to the party’s auditor still finalising the figures.

Debono, who is considering running for the vacant leadership on the back of significant public support, also said he has some ideas on how to tackle the PN’s longstanding debt problems.

“If I decide to contest, I will tell PN members what my plan is. I also believe that members and councillors should expect leadership candidates to clearly present their plans in advance.”
