Watch: Freezing Organic Waste To Fight Odour? Wasteserv CEO’s Unconventional Advice Sparks Debate

In light of the ongoing waste crisis, Wasteserv CEO Richard Bilocca has brought forward the suggestion for residents to start freezing their organic waste so they avoid odours from accumulating until the next collection day.

This was said during a recent episode of XTRA on TVM together with Saviour Balzan, which was aired on Monday – with the unconventional advice sparking a national debate.

“Right now the organic bag is collected three times a week, and the black bag twice a week, so including the organic waste with the black bag is not a solution,” Bilocca said.

“A small suggestion, to avoid the problem of bad odours especially in summer, is to freeze the bag when it is full to be taken out on the correct day so as to solve this issue.”

“This does not create any problems for us,” Bilocca assured.

Although the ongoing waste saga continues to cause multiple inconveniences and problems for residents, Bilocca celebrated that at least, the black bag tonnage has decreased by 10% as a result of the new waste system.

Present during the show were also a number of mayors including Sliema Mayor John Pillow, who has recently initiated a “name and shame” campaign where he directly calls out the residents who are bringing their trash out on the wrong days.

He has also suggested the involvement of the army to make sure that a strong level of enforcement becomes present on our roads.

St Julian mayor Guido Dalli,  Swieqi mayor Noel Muscat, St Paul’s Bay mayor Alfred Grima together with Pillow all stressed that the waste problem cannot be ignored for much longer and that drastic measures are needed.

This comes on the tail end of a protest held in Sliema where a massive crowd of residents gathered to make their voices heard about the ongoing crisis.
