Watch: ‘Game Changer’ – Robert Abela Discusses Land Reclamation Plans Off Coast Of Birżebbuġa
Prime Minister Robert Abela said that land reclamation off the coast of Birżebbuġa could prove to be a “game changer” for society.
A terminal expansion project involving the use of reclaimed land is currently underway at the Malta Freeport. However, the 2026 Budget said that this is only the start and that the government is planning a “large-scale” land reclamation project nearby that would involve the relocation of certain commercial activities.
“I believe that the Malta Freeport’s project is the lowest hanging fruit of all possible land reclamation projects,” Abela told a press conference after the Budget.
“The sea near the Freeport is an ideal depth for these kinds of projects, and our idea is to relocate industries that bother people.”
The Prime Minister didn’t provide details on which industries could be relocated to reclaimed land, stating that the government is still working on technical details.
However, he said the plans are progressing at a steady pace and that these projects could prove to be a “game changer” for Malta.
“Be it in Msida or Marsa, these projects have been taking place in Malta for years, and modern technology allows us to do much more,” he said.
“We believe that industries which pose a certain burden to society can be relocated to reclaimed land. At the same time, developers who are investing in construction works that might be bothering people can invest in these projects that are of a greater benefit to communities.”
