In an international friendly at the Centenary Stadium, Malta’s Under-19 national team played against Albania bringing the match to a 2-2 draw. The match, which unfolded on Friday, witnessed an unexpected turn of events in injury time, with goalkeeper Luca Camilleri emerging as the hero for Malta.

In the final moments of the game, when the Maltese team was fated for a loss, the goaler turned the match on its head by leaving his post, joining the attack and scoring a powerful goal himself. When the ball fell to him on the rebound, Camilleri unleashed a powerful strike into the net, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The game seemed set for a familiar outcome for the Maltese side, having suffered a 1-0 defeat against Albania earlier in the week, with Prendi Denis securing the lone goal. However, the young Maltese squad demonstrated their fighting spirit throughout the match, refusing to concede defeat easily.

Albania took the lead with Frederik Tosku’s goal in the 18th minute, setting the stage for a challenging battle for Malta. Yet, the resilient Maltese team rallied back, with Sven Xerri levelling the score with a well-taken goal in the second half.

As the match entered its final moments, tensions ran high when Albania was awarded a penalty in the last minutes of regular time. Olsi Myrta’s miss from the spot initially offered Malta a lifeline, only for the Albania player to capitalise on the rebound and put his team ahead once again, seemingly sealing victory.

However, Malta seized a last-gasp opportunity to salvage a draw. With the match deep into injury time, a Malta freekick found its way into the box, leading to a scramble in front of Albania’s goal.

Well done Luca!
