Watch: ‘Gozo’s Changed, People Are Installing Cameras And Locking Their Doors’, PN MP Alex Borg Warns
In the face of a rise in criminality, Gozo is looking less like the serene, peaceful sister island most Maltese historically know it as – however, PN’s Alex Borg believes the country is still in time to fix things.
“In Gozo, we are used to leaving the key in the door, leaving the car open, but nowadays, it’s all changed, you don’t see these things anymore,” he told Lovin Malta in a new sit-down interview.
“There’s been such a demographic change, such a rise in criminality, robberies, drugs, fights in the street…. I spoke to residents who had to invest in cameras and alarm systems because they are so scared.”
“This is a problem for all of Malta and Gozo…” he continued. “I’m speaking as the spokesperson for Gozo, but yes I speak to police, even Maltese officers, and they tell me how demotivated they are, how they feel they have lost society’s respect.”
“However, I don’t think it’s changed forever, I think we are still in with the chance to change this new dynamic in Gozo.”
Borg’s interview comes after two violent incidents in the streets of Gozo within a week, one on Xlendi and another in Marsalforn.
But, according to Borg, this is just the tip of the iceberg, with all sorts of crimes on the rise on the sister island.
Do you think Gozo has irreversibly changed?
