Watch: Gozo’s Crime Rate Is Very Low, Minister Insists, Dismissing Call For More Police

Gozo is unlikely to get any more police officers anytime soon, with Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri seriously playing down concerns by PN MP Alex Borg about crime on the island.

The two politicians clashed in Parliament today after Borg warned Camilleri that there have been a spate of robberies and street fights  in Gozo in recent months and asked him whether more police officers will be assigned there as a result.

However, Camilleri said the most recent Annual Crime Report shows that crime in Malta, and even more so Gozo, is “very low”.

“Last year, Malta’s crime rate was 28 per 1000 people and Gozo’s was 24 per 1,000. We need to be realistic.”

He also noted that several Gozitan councillors told him personally that the introduction of community police to the seaside town have significantly helped reduce crime.

Borg hit back, stating that Gozo witnessed five robberies in the past 24 hours alone, that street fights have become a weekly occurrence, and that police officers are demotivated and under-supported.

Lovin Malta recently interviewed Borg about the crime situation in Gozo and you can follow it below.
