Watch: Graffitti Activist Hits Back At Claim Her Pro-Choice Stance Contradicts Her Activism
During a recent fiery debate on NET TV about Malta’s new abortion bill, Moviment Graffitti activist Christine Cassar was challenged over whether her pro-choice stance contradicts other elements of her activism.
“Moviment Graffitti speaks about everything, from the environment to animals to people living in poverty,” Opinjoni presenter Dione Borg pointed out. “You try to protect everything… don’t you feel it’s a contradiction in your principles that you’re not also defending unborn babies?”
Cassar dismissed Borg’s reasoning, arguing that relaxing Malta’s abortion laws when the mother’s life or health is in danger “isn’t a matter of opinion but a matter of rights”.
“As a mother, I should have a right to decide what medicine and treatment to take, and no one else should take this decision for me.”
Asked by Borg whether “unborn babies don’t have rights too”, Cassar reiterated her stance that the decision should lie with the prospective mother alone.
“I must bear the risks and I must take the decisions, I know what risks I’m ready to take on myself.”
Her statement proved controversial, with veteran journalist and pro-life activist Peppi Azzopardi insisting “unborn babies shouldn’t be killed” unless the mother is at risk of dying.
The debate also featured medical student Michaela Agius, who took on a pro-life stance, and ADPD deputy leader Sandra Gauci, who adopted a pro-choice position.
