Robert Abela has hit out at proposals to increase the EU’s defence budget, declaring that the Labour Party “wants peace, while others want war”.

Addressing supporters in Bormla yesterday, Abela pounced on a remark by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola that the EU should ramp up its defence spending. Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has endorsed her statement.

“While others want EU countries to spend more on weapons, we care about investing in people,” the Prime Minister said.

“Wonder of wonders, the Opposition keeps insisting that it wants to spend your money on weapons. Go trust them to lead the country. We need to work strongly to elect PL MEPs who truly believe in the value of peace.”

“It’s so ironic that they want us to reduce our subsidies on electricity, water and fuel, but then invest more on weapons. I tell them ‘ħalluna, tridux’ (leave us alone, why don’t you?).”

“We don’t believe in more investment in weapons but in investment in people and peace. That is the key to economic and social progress.”

Should the EU increase its defence budget?
