Watch: Ħamrun’s Late Winner Gives Bayer Leverkusen Honour As Europe’s Last Undefeated European Team
Ħamrun Spartans’ late victory over Floriana gave them a major boost in their hunt for the Maltese Premier League title but it also had some pretty huge international implications.
With nine victories and two draws prior to the Ħamrun game, Floriana were one of only two senior men’s football clubs out of UEFA’s top-tier European teams not to lose a single official game this season.
The other club? Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who has been setting the Bundesliga alight this season. This feat was recognised by international sport website Sportbible, whose post giving a shoutout to Floriana delighted some Maltese football fans.
As for Floriana, they will be left ruing their missed opportunities, which included a penalty kick saved by Ħamrun’s Henry Bonello. Ħamrun scored the winner in the 93rd minute after midfielder Roko Prša tapped into an empty net following an error by Floriana’s keeper Georgi Kitanov.
