Watch: ‘He Could Collapse And Die’ – Pieta’ Painter Filmed Dangerously Sitting Six Storeys Up

Article Featured Image

A Pieta’ resident reached out to Lovin Malta with footage of a construction worker working on the outside of a building – dozens of metres above the ground – whilst sitting on a plank of wood suspended by ropes from the roof above.

“There might be a possibility the guy will collapse and die,” said the resident, “and it is my obligation to report this.”

They got in contact with the Occupational Health and Safety Authority, who confirmed that they had received the information and the video – but it was not clear that they had followed up on the scene.

The resident spotted this worker for the first time yesterday, when they filed the initial report, before capturing more footage the next day.

After capturing the first photograph, they took to social media where commenters pointed out that the worker was harnessed – for an added layer of safety – and that as far as they knew, this is legal in Malta.

Others pointed out that scaffolding would be significantly safer, and that falling from such a height, in a harness, would make it difficult for a person to be recovered, particularly if they were to pass out.

Whether it is, or is not legal, people in previous cases have pointed to the fact that incidents such as this one contribute to Malta’s reputation for exposing construction workers to dangerous conditions – and these conditions have led to deaths and accidents.

At the very least, this isn’t a great look for a construction industry which is already not popular.

More importantly, it doesn’t seem like a great way to work.
