Shortly before heading off to Rome to attend Pope Francis’s funeral, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola shared some personal reflections on the late pontiff.

In a new interview with Lovin Malta’s Tim Diacono, Metsola opened up about a 40-minute conversation she had with Pope Francis at the Vatican last October.

She said the Pope was concerned that the world was passing through a “particularly difficult period” and inquired into the European Parliament’s role.

They also spoke about women in politics and the Pope asked Metsola how she manages to balance her demanding job with looking after her four children.

However, they also discussed the Church, with Metsola stating that Pope Francis spoke like a politician when delving into its challenges.

“We also spoke about the Church’s challenges, such as the shortage of priests in certain areas, as well as his role in balancing different factions. He spoke as a politician first of all, as a person who was very interested in politics.”
