Maltese photographer and light artist Mark Cassar has shared some behind-the-scenes details of his reconstruction of Gozo’s Azure Window with light.

“It’s easy to light paint and take one photograph, but you are limited to a certain time; you can’t have a shutter open for longer than say 30 seconds, because exterior lights would really come into play then,” Mark told Lovin Malta of the delicate but beautiful process.

“So if I need longer than that to paint a facade with a flashlight, I would take a bunch of photos and then layer them all on top of each other. And that’s exactly what I had to do for Dwejra because it was a very long process which required stacking images.”

“But it’s very easy to pull off – you can even do it with a very cheap light and your own phone!” Mark continued.

“We’re very lucky these days with all the equipment we have around us and in our pockets.”

Mark has been busy creating what he calls “light paintings” all over the island, dazzling viewers with some incredible work.

In footage sent to Lovin Malta, Mark sheds light on how he was able to reconstruct the Azure Window, giving a unique insight into his work.
