WATCH: ‘How Am I Meant To Remember?’ Ex-Gozo Minister Struggles To Explain Spending €390,000 On Social Media

Ex-Gozo Minister Anton Refalo struggled to explain how he spent €394,000 on social media from 2013 to 2017, when the Gozo Ministry didn’t have a Facebook page.

“How am I meant to remember what I did four years ago?” Refalo said when asked by Lovin Malta about this expenditure, which was revealed in a parliamentary question. “There’s the permanent secretary, he’s still there, the same one that was there four years ago. Ask him.”

He went on to attribute the spending of such funds to a campaign launched back when he was still Gozo Minister which sought to encourage Maltese people to choose Gozo as their holiday destination instead of going abroad.

After Lovin Malta highlighted that such a campaign did not take place on the ministry’s Facebook page, as this was non-existent back then, Refalo, who is presently the Agriculture and Animal Rights Minister defended his actions by saying: “We didn’t have a Facebook page. Just because you don’t do it on the ministry’s Facebook page doesn’t mean there aren’t other places where it can be done.”

Lovin Malta asked the minister to confirm whether he used such funds on his personal Facebook page, to which he replied: “If you want more information there’s the permanent secretary, ask him. It’s a civic duty, not my own.”

When asked if he denies using such funds, Refalo appeared flustered and said: “I don’t know. I don’t know what happened.”

Last week, Kaxxaturi launched an online petition requesting a comprehensive audit into ministers’ Facebook misuse and demanding a full refund of any misspent taxpayer money.

As of today, the petition has amassed 3,330 signatures, and €5,740 has been donated for the Kaxxaturi video tackling said scandal to be promoted on Facebook.
