Watch: How I Flipped Norman Lowell Voters To My Side – PL MEP Candidate
PL MEP candidate Clint Azzopardi Flores said that his views on controlling migration levels convinced some Norman Lowell voters to vote for him instead.
In an interview with Lovin Malta, Azzopardi Flores recounted some conversations he had with people who originally planned to vote for Lowell in June.
“If, for example, the construction sector needs to grow annually by 2% over the next five years, we economists know how to analyse how many workers we will need. This is basic economics that you’re taught about in university,” Azzopardi Flores said.
“So you find out how many painters, plasterers and so on you need over the next five years and bring in that amount, not a free-for-all system with everyone just entering as they please.”
“When I spoke about this last August, people told me that I was the only person speaking about it and that they were originally going to vote for Lowell but will vote for me instead. Moreover, they read my English articles about issues that arose in Ħamrun two years ago, and it appeared as though I was the only one speaking out.”
“They said they were going to give their 1 to Lowell but will give it to me instead. I’m saying what they told me.”
“People don’t have a problem with foreigners. All they want is control over the foreigners who enter.”
“If we need nurses, hospital assistants, construction workers, retail workers and so on, then we will bring in as many as we need and then assess the situation later. But it shouldn’t be a free labour supply with everyone choosing who they want from the shelves. Just because the EU is a free market, it doesn’t mean you should open it up to third countries and treat them as a practically infinite labour supply.”
In this vein, he endorsed a government plan to regulate temping agencies that is set to kick into force in April.
