Watch: ‘How Petty Must You Be To Bin Daphne Caruana Galizia Tributes?’ – Greens MEP

German Greens MEP Daniel Freund condemned the removal of flowers honouring Daphne Caruana Galizia from the Great Siege Memorial, calling it a “petty” act.
“In Valletta, there is a monument where flowers are laid down every year to commemorate the work and life of Daphne Caruana Galizia and her brutal assassination eight years ago,” Freund said.
“How petty do you have to be to throw those flowers into the bin?”
Freund’s speech was delivered during a European Parliament plenary debate about justice and the rule of law in Malta following the journalist’s assassination back in 2017.
Neville Gafà, who has a customer care role at Castille, was filmed clearing the flowers from the monument last week after they had been laid there to mark the eight-year anniversary of Caruana Galizia’s murder.
Besides the removal of the flowers, Freund also warned that the Maltese government has been slow to adopt most of GRECO’s anti-corruption recommendations, while the EP’s rule of law report indicates a lack of progress.
He went on to incorrectly claim that no one who Caruana Galizia had implicated in corruption has been prosecuted yet, and called out Prime Minister Robert Abela for his criticism of Magistrate Gabriella Vella – who carried out an inquiry into the Vitals-Steward hospital deal.
