Watch: ‘I Am In Politics To Fight Corruption,’ Roberta Metsola Assures While Addressing EU Parliament Scandal
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has assured that one of the main reasons for her involvement in politics is to directly fight against corruption.
Metsola delivered the powerful speech while addressing the ongoing EU Parliament scandal involving one of the Parliament’s vice presidents, Eva Kaili.
Kaili has now lost her position as vice president in view of the ongoing investigations after the EP President announced the decision yesterday.
The now ex-vice president was arrested in Belgium on Friday and is being charged with involvement in corruption, money laundering, and forming part of a criminal organisation.
“I am in politics, like so many of you here, to fight corruption, to stand up for the principles of Europe,” Metsola said addressing the parliament on Tuesday.
“This is a test of our values and of our systems and, colleagues, let me assure you that we will meet this test head-on. There will be no impunity, none, there will be no sweeping under the carpet,” she promised.
“These are challenging times for us all but I know and I am convinced that if we work together we can come out of it stronger.”
“And to those malign actors in third countries who think they can buy their way forward, who think Europe is for sale, who think they can take over our NGOs, let me say, that you will find this parliament firmly in your way.”
“We are Europeans and we would rather be cold than bought.”
