The wife, daughter, and two sons of police constable Simon Schembri, who was critically injured in a brutal hit-and-run in Luqa in May of this year, have spoken about the chilling moments they learnt about the attack.

In the first emotional video released by the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation, the family give a personal account of where they were when they heard the terrible news – and how they reacted in the moments that followed.

“I felt a lot of different things that day, but at the time I just kept everything inside, especially because of all my family around me… I didn’t want to show them how broken I was inside,” said Sheean Schembri.

His wife recounted the moment she was told Simon had his hand amputated

“I arrived at the hospital, and I saw all his friends from the traffic division outside, and I went inside and saw more of his friends who had arrived before me. When the doctor came, he told me they were trying to save his life… then he returned a bit later and told me about his hand, which was a big shock for me,” his wife Moira said.

His youngest son, Liam, didn’t know what was happening at the time – though he knew something was up

“When we were at my aunt’s house, no one wanted to tell me what had happened, because I’m the youngest child, and I spent the most time with my dad, so I have a close bond with him. When we arrived at hospital, that’s when I realised something had happened, when I saw all those people crying, dispirited, and then the psychologist came and told us he had bad news, to ‘prepare yourself for what you are about to see, but don’t lose heart’ – that’s when I realised my dad was in a bad state,” said Liam Schembri.

Other emergency workers, from first responders to policemen to rescuer service workers, open up about the most impactful moment of their careers in the video

The Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation was set up following Simon Schembri’s hit-and-run – but it will now cater for any and all emergency workers in Malta, and support them in any difficulty they may face.

The foundation aims to shed a light on the every day dangers and peril these heroic workers put themselves in, to protect and save people when they find themselves in need of help.

There were many who expressed their support for the Blue Light Foundation and praised the family for their bravery
