Watch: ‘I Froze’ – MaltaPost Courier Opens Up After ‘Hurtful’ Fat-Shaming While On The Job

A postwoman who was fat-shamed by a homeowner as she was doing her work rounds has opened up about how some people’s comments can truly hurt someone – especially if they already live with low self esteem.
Anthea Psaila, partner of singer Celine Agius, who had previously opened up about challenges she faces in society due to her body, was doing her rounds today when she came across one of her regulars in her home.
Informing her that from next week a new courier would be taking over her route, she was left shocked by what the woman told her.
“She told me ‘that’s better’. I said ‘why better?’ I always delivered her goods and letters. She just told me ‘because you’re fat and she’s thin’.”
“I froze, I didn’t know what to say to her. Then I said, ‘just because I’m fat doesn’t mean I can’t move’.”

Anthea said that other workers in her line of work know what the job entails.
“Workers know what I am talking about – this line of work isn’t a race. You can get hurt, and like all other jobs, if you hurry and hurt yourself, you’ll be the one who suffers.”
And she couldn’t believe the woman would say something so rude to her, especially after the busy Christmas period just ended.
“It hurt that instead of saying thank you for working during this tough Christmas period in the rain, she was happy I’d be replaced.”
She ended by reminding people to be careful with their words as they may send someone down a mental health spiral without even realising.
“I’m a person with low self-esteem, and something like this is enough to crucify me and send me downwards. I’m not doing this for sympathy – I’m doing this because there are people who don’t know how to control their tongues, and they can really hurt others.”
