A leading Maltese chef has recounted the traumatic experience of seeing his mother beaten daily by her partner, and the lengths he went to when dealing with the abuse.

During his appearance on Jon Mallia’s podcast show Il-Podcast ta’ Jon, Daniel Borg Cardona, of Burgers.Ink and Wagyu fame, spoke about how his mother began dating an Irishman.

“He was a great guy, with a heart of gold – but when he drank, he’d beat her daily. Every single day. And that’s when my life started falling behind.”

Borg Cardona, who has previously opened up about his strained relationship with his mother after he reunited with her after 12 years a few Christmases ago, said the abuse led him to commit petty crimes.

“I would go home, and one time I stole LM25 from a grocer across from me… I would go to him every morning as if I was buying a banana, and I went and opened his cash register and took LM25.”

“And I asked myself, ‘what am I going to do with this cash?’ So I went and bought an MP3 player. You know why I bought it? So that when I went home in the evening I could put music on so I wouldn’t hear him beating my mum.”

He would pray for a reprieve for his mother.

“I would say “ilalla man, please Jesus, make it that this evening he doesn’t beat her.”

“So I’d just lay in bed with the songs playing so I don’t hear her screams… it was every day, Monday to Friday, that he’d beat her….”
