Independent MEP candidate and former PL mayor Conrad Borg Manché has given people an insight into a showdown he had with Prime Minister Robert Abela before he resigned from the Labour Party.

“I met with the Prime Minister and told him that we’re two different people,” Borg Manché said on Jon Mallia’s show Il-Podcast ta’ Jon, in an interview that is currently available to Patreon subscribers.

“He criticised me because I am vociferous about certain things, and I told him he cannot compare me to other people. I suffered a lot in my life due to certain family issues. I told him that he and I are made of different stuff and that if I don’t like something, I will speak out about it, love me or hate me.”

“You cannot control me a leash and place me where you want like you do with others, that’s not who I am. I said this to his face and I realised he wasn’t interested, so when it came to the crunch I said ‘that’s it’.”

“The Prime Minister told me that even he suffered in life. How did he suffer? He doesn’t even know the meaning of the word. I was confrontational with him and I expected him to kick me out himself but the opposite happened.”

Borg Manché had a major fallout with the Labour Party after he opposed plans to build a petrol station in Ġnien il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa, Gżira.

He said he was removed as chairperson of the government’s environment agency Ambjent Malta shortly after the 2022 general election out of pure spite.

“I didn’t do anything wrong, while wrongdoers get promoted and given the jobs they want. Do you expect the chairman of Ambjent Malta to allow a petrol station to be built inside a garden? I told the Prime Minister this directly but he just stared at me because he knew I was right.”

“Did he want me to turn myself into a joke just because someone wanted to build a petrol station inside a garden. As if. I know I paid a price but I don’t regret it at all.”

Borg Manché said that Abela offered him an olive branch when he asked him if he “wants anything” but the mayor took it as an attempt by the Prime Minister to buy his silence.

“I told him I don’t want anything. I don’t repeat mistakes, and I had no intention of giving him another opportunity to close the tap for me.”
