A woman who was in the Ħamrun building that collapsed this morning has spoken up about her harrowing experience… and about how she had warned authorities and neighbours of this exact possibility.

“This morning, we heard a big noise, we realised it was close, so I started walking around the rooms trying to see where it was coming from in a state of panic,” the woman, who lives with her seven-year-old woman and mother said. “I started telling them ‘I don’t think it’s ours’, then I walked into the kitchen and I see an absolute disaster, pointing at the first big hole in the collapsed wall. The resident then grabbed her daughter and elderly woman and rushed outside.

“This is exactly why I had been uploading photos and videos and posts on Facebook and reporting the construction”

The woman had said she felt tremors in the building as far back as last month, and this had led to her scrambling to take action before it was too late.

“I reported this to MEPA, I found a lawyer, I did everything I could,” the woman said, noting how the collapse of an entire block of apartments in Gwardamanġa just down the road was “an eyeopener”.

“Our architect warned us that the way they were developed meant that the building was becoming unsafe,” one resident said after she had felt a series of tremors in the block.

This had happened back on 10th May, and the woman had even uploaded a video shouting at the workers.

“There were people who told me I was exaggerating, but this is the result,” the resident said, pointing behind her at the gaping hole in the wall.

“Next Sunday, we have the Holy Communion of my niece,” the woman said. “The dress is in there. We’re out here in shorts and a t-shirt. Is this how we’re going? And where are we sleeping tonight?”
