Watch: Ian Borg Suggests Bernard Grech Could Stay On As PN Leader

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg has suggested that Bernard Grech could well decide to stay on as PN leader.

Addressing a PL rally yesterday, Borg described the PN’s current situation as one of “absolute chaos”.

“Another leader has resigned but I haven’t yet heard Bernard Grech say that he won’t contest,” he said. “There were previous PN leaders who resigned with one hand, and then retracted it with the other.”

Borg said the situation in the PN shows that the party cannot be trusted as an alternative government and increases the pressure on the PL to provide stable leadership.

The Deputy Prime Minister also reflected on the past 12 months since the last MEP election, when the gap between the parties shrank to just over 8,000 votes.

“Such a majority after 12 years in government would still have been considered extraordinary in other countries,” Borg argued.

“Robert Abela could have just said that he won and ignored the public’s message to the government. He could also have done like Bernard Grech and resigned because he felt that tough times were coming.”

“When Robert Abela approached me to take on the role of Deputy Prime Minister, I could have said that I already had a lot on my plate.”

“When Alex Agius Saliba was approached to take on the other deputy leader role, he could have said that he wants to be with his family when he is in Malta.”

“However, we united as a party, did our utmost, and increased our support.”
