Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli played down concerns put forward by Martin Balzan, the head of Malta’s Medical Association, following the country’s decision to open its ports to high-risk countries and host mass events.

Hours later, Malta’s active COVID-19 cases doubled – and they’re all related to the new case uncovered yesterday from G7 and Sound Salon’s Hotel Takeover.

When questioned about Balzan’s statement, Farrugia Portelli said “I take proper precautions before raising fears. Our decision always involved the public health superintendent.”

“I’m sure we know what we’re doing.”

In response to questions made by Lovin Malta about how public safety will be maintained during mass events, the Minister advised party-goers to keep up social-distancing and frequent sanitisation.
