Watch: Iman Weighs In On Euthanasia – ‘If There Is No Pain, How Can We Understand Peace?

Imam Laiq Ahmed Atif, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta community, has weighed in on the euthanasia debate and explained why Islam opposes it in principle.
“Islam, like Catholicism, doesn’t agree with the concept of euthanasia because it gives a lot of value to the sanctity of human life,” he said on a recent F Living discussion show.
“Only God gives life and only God can give death. This is exclusively up to God, and not up to humans. However, the Quran teaches that God doesn’t burden people with more than they can bear and that he rewards the faithful who pass through rough times by forgiving their sins.”
On a philosophical note, he said that concepts such as happiness and peace cannot be understood without the existence of their counterparts – pain and suffering.

“If there is no darkness, how can we understand light? Darkness gives us the opportunity to understand the philosophy of life, and suffering gives people time to reflect and understand the true philosophy of life.”
He also argued that the existence of pain and discomfort is crucial to the progress of humankind.
“Technological and medical progress is the result of people feeling the need for them.
“If there was no pain, then people could remain in their comfort zones instead of using their abilities to create new means to bring about peace and health.”
