A total of 49 people were arrested, mainly in Rabat and Marsalforn, and police said they were all Africa and eastern European.

They were taken to the Safi Detention Centre to await deportation to their country of origin or the country they legally reside in.

“The police is determined to keep prioritising security in the heart of Maltese and Gozitan localities, and will beef up enforcement and community services to people who, in their majority, are honest citizens who observe public order,” the police said.
