Watch: Is A Nine-Month-Old Unborn Child A Foetus Or A Baby, NET Questions Robert Abela
As Prime Minister Robert Abela took questions from the media about the proposed abortion law, a journalist from PN media house NET seized the opportunity to ask him about his personal views on unborn children.
“Do you consider a human who has been in their mother’s womb for seven or nine months to be a foetus or a baby?” the NET journalist asked.
Abela said the question illustrates how “the Opposition is deceiving people”.
“The medical community is clear that a foetus can be birthed after 24 weeks,” he pointed out. “If we’re talking about a seven or nine-month-old pregnancy, there should be no doubt or discussion.. the foetus should be given birth to.”
Offering an olive branch to critics of the bill, the Prime Minister said he is willing to discuss amendments to the wording to safeguard against people abusing the system on health grounds.
However, he stressed that the bill’s main principles – the safeguarding of women’s lives and health – from serious danger must be included in the final version of the law.
“We cannot derogate from those principles,” he said. “If it is possible for the mother’s life and health and the foetus to coexist, then both must be saved.”
