Watch: Isabelle Bonnici Thanks PL MP For ‘Courage And Honesty’ To Admit Vote Mistake

After PL MP Malcolm Paul Agius Galea publicly admitted that he made a mistake when he voted against a public inquiry into Jean Paul Sofia’s death Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici thanked him for his honesty – before giving her thoughts on how his colleagues reacted.

“I appreciate that he had the courage to realise his mistake,” Bonnici said in an interview with Lovin Malta.

“I appreciate that he was honest and said what he felt,”

She added that other PL MPs certainly feel a similar regret.

“When I called them up before the vote, they told me that I’m right but that they’re going to vote as a team” she said.

“Even the body language of certain PL MPs during the vote shows they had voted unwillingly.”

Agius Galea has said that while the vote against a public inquiry was correct from a legal point of view, politics cannot be reduced to solely legal arguments.

“Sometimes in politics, you must work as a politician and not as a doctor or a lawyer. You need to vote with your mind, rather than your heart. In this case, things were way different than what we thought they would be,” he said.

Although every PL MP voted against a public inquiry last July, Prime Minister Robert Abela performed a stunning U-turn a few days later and announced that a public inquiry would in fact be held.

However, government whip Andy Ellul insisted that the original vote wasn’t a mistake.

Do you think PL MPs who regret their original vote should speak out?
