A police inspector had words of gushing praise for the new uniform announced for Malta’s police force, stating it will make their daily life easier and safer.

“It’s a drastic change and a surreal moment,” David Bugeja said on ONE TV’s Plaza last night.

“We have long heard that the uniform might change but over the past four years, we really put our minds to work and embarked on an entire process, including consultation and market research, to effectively change the uniform into one that is more comfortable and functional and which has a distinct appearance that will become associated with the police force over time.”

The new uniform is the result of a €2.4 million investment, a significant cost considering Malta has around 2,400 police officers. However, Bugeja pointed out that the changes from the old uniform are not merely cosmetic and that every aspect was planned, “down to the last button”.

“The cloth is adapted to the Maltese climate – although it’s black, it’s composed of functional textiles that allow sweat to evaporate and push the internal temperature down,” he said.

“Every layer offers protection – for example the trousers have an element of water repellence so if you’re standing in the rain you won’t get completely soaked and have to spend the whole day in a wet uniform.”

He added that the caps are essentially hard hats, with reflective tape that will make officers visible to drivers at night, and that the bodycams are given better support.

“I’m really looking forward to these changes,” he concluded.
