In a Sky News interview, Malta’s Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo told Brits that it would be cheaper to spend an extended winter holiday on the island than to remain at home and face soaring electricity bills.

Starting off the interview, Sky journalist Kay Burley said it was a “sign of the times” that Malta was attracting British tourists by telling them they can spend weeks on the island without having to heat their homes.

“Malta is an all-round destination, not least because the winter sun is here. Today was a perfect day in Malta once again. All of that together with all there is to do in Malta makes it the perfect package destination,” Bartolo said.

When Burley said that several British people are choosing to come to Malta because it’s cheaper than to heat their homes, Bartolo said that was indeed the case.

“When one is there, they can have an affordable family holiday, something I believe everyone should be looking for in these times,” he said.

“You can spend quality time with your friends too and there’s so much to do. You can sample our local cuisine, and there are at least 30 restaurants listed in the Michelin guide, and a lot of other traditional restaurants too.”

“A number of events will take place in the coming weeks and months, such as Cirque de Soleil, which will run a show made especially for Malta, and several Christmas events. There is also very good connectivity between Malta and the UK, something we have been working on over the past few weeks to make sure connectivity is even better next year.”

Bartolo pointed out that the government has subsidised energy to prevent electricity bills from rising, stating that this policy has made Malta a more competitive holiday destination while safeguarding Maltese families and businesses.
