ABBA leader and MEP candidate Ivan Grech Mintoff locked heads with Broadcasting Authority CEO Joanna Spiteri after she banned him from bringing eggs into an election debate.

In a video filmed by PM News Malta, Grech Mintoff could be seen entering today’s BA debate against Clint Azzopardi Flores (PL) and Norma Camilleri (PN) with an entire carton of eggs, intending to throw some of them on the floor as a form of protest.

However, Spiteri stopped him at the door of the old PBS studios and told him he was only allowed to bring in papers and associated stationery into the debate room.

“I have spoken to my lawyers and my human rights dictate that I have a right to a peaceful protest,” Grech Mintoff said. “I have already conducted two similar protests without a problem.”

After Spiteri stood her ground, Grech Mintoff warned that he will open a court case against the Broadcasting Authority for breaching his right to stage a peaceful protest.

“It’s up to you, but you have been pre-warned. This is a fascist style to stop a protest,” he said.

Grech Mintoff left the eggs behind and the debate proceeded without an eggy protest.
