Watch: Jason Micallef Defends ‘Innovative’ Valletta Christmas Tree And Says It’s Unrelated To Construction
Valletta Cultural Agency chairman Jason Micallef defended the controversial Christmas tree in the capital and said he believes it was an innovative idea.
On ONE TV’s Bil-Fatti, Micallef said the point of the tree was to break with conventional Christmas tree designs and use it as an occasion to celebrate local traditions.
“It was an innovative idea, at least that’s how I saw it,” Micallef said.
Rather than baubles, stars, bows and other items traditionally associated with Christmas trees, the new Valletta tree is adorned with lanterns, window blinds and balconies.

Micallef said the design had “absolutely nothing” to do with construction, as some commentators suggested, and claimed a group of people have embarked on a campaign to “ruin Christmas festivities” in the capital.
“I sincerely feel sorry for the mentality of a small clique of people who have embarked on a campaign with a single goal of ruining the Valletta Christmas festivities and attacking businesses through constant protests.”
“We organise feasts while others organise protests. I have no doubt that the absolute majority of people want a happy and peaceful Christmas that they can celebrate in this jewel of a city. Right now, businesses are doing well, people are hugging each other, taking photos, having fun, and organising parties, and that’s how it should be.”
“If there’s a protest on Sunday, Monday or next week, then that’s up to the organisers but I’m sure that the people of Malta want feasts, not protests, during Christmas.”
