Watch: Jason Micallef Warns Of Public Frustration With Government Officials Not Delivering
Valletta Cultural Agency chairman Jason Micallef has warned that certain people within the government aren’t delivering and that the public is noticing.
“I feel that there are people close to and within the government who aren’t justifying their positions,” Micallef said on the F Living Show this week. “You may call me presumptuous but I cannot accept a capital project proceeding without any public progress meetings or explanations given for delays.”
“The public is a customer and the customer is always right.”
“When you’re in charge of capital projects that entail several millions of public funds, you must periodically update the public on why the roadworks are taking long, why the ditch is still open and why there still isn’t a completion date for a project.”
“There are also issues about related to traffic and government agencies and authorities that people feel aren’t delivering, and which take too long to respond to people. This brings a sense of frustration.”
Micallef said people can feel that certain government officials haven’t been appointed because of their talents but because someone wants them in that role.
“That is reflected in people getting fed up, a sense of disappointment. I elected you and I feel you’re letting me down, not necessarily on a personal level but because you’re not delivering.”
As an example, he referred to the recent traffic nightmare that arose after the Msida local council closed off Triq ix-Xatt to accommodate an activity.
“A few hours later, the council apologised and reopened the road, but this carelessness and lack of coordination is really damaging the government and people within the government who are working really well.”
