Watch: John Bundy – ‘This Is Why Maltese Youths Don’t Want To Work As Waiters’

Veteran broadcaster John Bundy has weighed into the foreign workers debate by arguing that Maltese youths simply aren’t interested in certain jobs because there are way “better” opportunities on the job market.
“Our youths have many better opportunities than working as waiters, taxi drivers or construction workers, so no matter how much you pay them, they won’t work in those jobs,” Bundy said during a debate about youths on Popolin.
“Instead, they will opt to go to financial companies, gaming companies, and the like.”
Here, TV personality Josephine Mallia chimed in, arguing that although she wouldn’t expect her granddaughters to become waiters, other people are certainly interested in that line of work.
However, Bundy noted that even though ITS offers top-level catering courses, they aren’t producing enough Maltese waiters to fill in all the available jobs because they have more opportunities.
“Let’s be honest, opportunities were limited in the past but we now live in a more developed world.”
Bundy also referred to Malta’s birth rate, which statistics show is the lowest in Europe at 1.13 live births per woman, and the fact that several services have expanded in recent years.
“Up until a few years ago, there were only white and black taxis but there are six companies now. We didn’t have as many elderly care homes as we do today either; we only had St Vincent de Paul. Maltese people aren’t chickens that can hatch out of eggs after a few weeks.”
