Watch: Joseph Muscat – ‘I Can’t Forgive Myself For Never Visiting Mount Carmel’
Joseph Muscat has revealed that one of his greatest regrets during his time as Prime Minister was not giving enough focus to Malta’s mental health services.
In a recent F Living interview, Muscat said that while he still believes most of his big decisions were correct, he still has some niggling regrets.
“For example, I regret that I didn’t focus strongly enough on the mental health sector,” he said.
“One of my regrets is that I never visited Mount Carmel myself to see it with my eyes and visit the rooms one by one. I only realised this shortcoming afterwards, and I cannot forgive myself for it. I wondered how, over seven years, it never crossed my mind to visit.”
“I still beat myself up over it, it’s a massive regret of mine because I don’t think I understood the situation well. As Prime Minister, you constantly have to entrust things to other people, and it’s often the right decision, but there are certain things I would have liked to understand better, even if the people in charge were making the right decisions.”
Mount Carmel has been open since 1861 and Lovin Malta has regularly flagged conditions at the mental health hospital.
The government has long been promising a new mental health hospital and such plans were included in the PL’s 2017 and 2022 electoral manifestos. However, it has yet to come to fruition, although a site opposite Mater Dei has been formally identified.
Do you think Mount Carmel needs to shut down?
