Watch: Joseph Muscat – ‘If You Don’t Want Traffic, Go To A Desert’
Joseph Muscat put up a staunch defence of Malta’s economy amidst concerns that the island’s high population is causing infrastructural problems.
“If you don’t want traffic, go to the desert,” Muscat said in an interview on F Living. “Australia has empty roads and you can drive along them without encountering anyone.”
“There is no traffic, but there is nothing. And if you don’t want to encounter other people, go to a place where there isn’t work.”
“Do foreigners come to Malta because they like the country? They come here because there is work. During the COVID-19 period, there wasn’t work and they left. That is the truth.”
Describing the economy as a “cake”, Muscat said his goal as Prime Minister was always to “expand the cake”.
“There are all these theories, but ultimately you need a direction. Either you’re pleased with what you have or you want to progress, but if you want to progress you need money, and in government money comes from taxes. So you either need to increase taxes or grow the cake; my intention was always to grow the cake and only take half a slice from you, rather than a full slice.”
Thousands of viewers tuned in to F Living this afternoon to find out whether Muscat was going to announce whether or not he will contest the upcoming MEP elections. However, the former Prime Minister said he is keeping his options open and is weighing out several considerations – from the implications his candidature could have on PL and the massive support he received from the public to more personal concerns.
