Watch: Joseph Muscat’s Lawyer Loses It When Arnold Cassola Brings Up Corruption Award
Joseph Muscat’s lawyer Charlon Gouder let rip at Arnold Cassola after the independent candidate brought up the former Prime Minister’s infamous ‘Person of the Year for Corruption’ award.
During a debate on Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103, Cassola said he has “information from Brussels” that the S&D European political group is divided over whether to welcome Muscat within its fold should he contest the MEP election.
He said they are concerned over Muscat’s ‘Person of the Year for Corruption’ award that the OCCRP bestowed on him in the wake of Malta’s 2019 political crisis.
Gouder wasn’t having any of it and said Cassola should be “ashamed of himself”.
“Show me your evidence that a court has found the smallest bit of proof against Joseph Muscat,” he shouted. “If you have new evidence of corruption, then we can go to the police commissioner together. Do you have this proof? Stop preaching from the pulpit.”
Cassola retorted that he doesn’t trust police commissioner Angelo Gafà, who he claimed was appointed specifically to cast a blind eye on political corruption.
In terms of “evidence” against Muscat, Cassola said that Muscat had accepted presents from Yorgen Fenech and invited him to his birthday party even after he was informed that he was suspected of ordering the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Muscat has said he was following MSS orders to act normally around Fenech so as not to tip him off that he was under investigation.
Cassola also noted that former minister Konrad Mizzi and former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri had both said under oath that they never did anything without informing Muscat in advance.
However, Gouder insisted he was after a “precise” example of corruption involving Muscat that was confirmed by a court.
