WATCH: Kennedy Grove Is Infested With Brown Rats

Article Featured Image

A video posted by Facebook user Harri Itkonen of Kennedy Grove early in the morning shows a little bit more than just the beautiful rising sun. It shows rats. Many rats, like, scurrying under the road as soon as Harri’s vehicle approaches.

“There are hundreds of rats every morning near Kennedy Grove, just another side on the new Coast road. It’s difficult to try to get them all on video, but here is small group of them,” he said when he posted the video.

Arnold Sciberras, a naturalist and pest controller, said the situation will only get worse unless something is done soon

“Those are all brown rats, Rattus norvegicus, and the problem is that no-one heeded any of the recommendations that I’ve been giving. If the situation isn’t controlled, the area towards Salina and Kennedy Grove will be totally invaded and will become a disaster,” he says.

“Why disaster?” he rhetorically asks. “Simply because there is an overpopulation of rats that are a hazard towards any people who go there to use the park for recreational reasons, as well as anyone who wants to till the land because they will eat the drips along with the native flora.”

Saying that Comino has a similar issue, he is hoping for the local authorities to seriously address the issue, saying: “as an exterminator and consultant, I am tired of giving advice and trying to create a program for them to be controlled, only to be ignored.”
