Watch: Labour MP Warns Many People Overworking And Becoming Lonelier
Labour MP Malcolm Paul Agius Galea has warned that many people are overworking “to keep up with the life they think they should live” and are becoming lonelier as a result.
During a recent intervention on ONE TV’s Paperscan, Agius Galea praised the Faculty of Social Wellbeing for its new campaign to raise awareness about loneliness during the festive period.
This included a powerful documentary, in which a Maltese man called George Micallef said he finds December the hardest period of the year because the omnipresent signs of love and cheer make him realise how lonely he is.

“It’s important to think about this crucial social aspect during Christmastime,” Agius Galea said.
“Unfortunately, many people overwork to keep up with what the demands of what they believe is the life they should be living. Then they realise that their social life is suffering as a result, which gives rise to lots of mental health problems. As a doctor, I have to speak about this.”

He warned that while prices have shot up, Christmastime is characterised by excess consumption, including “stratospheric” food waste.
“Speaking for myself, when it comes to Christmas presents, it’s the thought that counts. It’s all well and good if people can buy things they can afford but ultimately it’s the thought that matters.”
