Leading Maltese women’s rights activist and lawyer Lara Dimitrijevic has called for gender equality to be ingrained within Malta’s education system and included in various school subjects.

“In Finland, just to give an example, they even teach gender equality in maths with numbers,” Dimitrijevic stated in an interview with Lovin Malta.

Dimitrijevic expressed her desire for gender equality to become ingrained in the education system, rooted in every single subject including mathematics – to completely let go of all biases when it comes to women’s and men’s social roles.

She said that raising awareness of real feminism is highly crucial, even for men and boys, stating that people tend to shy away from the word “feminism” because of the perception that feminists are man-haters.

Dimitrijevic stated that this perception couldn’t be further from the truth, that feminism is true gender equality, and we should all wear it proudly.

”And I think it’s such a good thing for men and boys in our country… it would be of benefit to them… having a feminist policy, having feminist politics, having feminist attitudes.”
