Watch: Lecturer Andrew Azzopardi Says Stipends Should Only Be Given To Students With Financial Problems
University of Malta lecturer Andrew Azzopardi called for a major revamp of stipends, arguing that they should only be paid to students in need of financial assistance.
While debating social benefits on Jon Mallia’s Il-Każin show, the social wellbeing lecturer warned that Malta has become a “country of benefits” and that the government is paying large sums of money to people who no longer require aid.
As an example, Azzopardi said that many students don’t need a stipend.
“There are different levels of stipends and those who need more money get more, but can someone convince me that students are using their stipends on books, internet and educational things?”
“We know it’s not true. Why should the University face problems such as a shortage of lecture rooms or laboratories that aren’t well equipped while we’re giving so much money as stipends.”
“Stipends should be given to those students who need it and not those whose parents can help them out.”
