A well-known Maltese athlete, entrepreneur and classic heart-throb has shared his take on the traditional institution of marriage – and why it may not work anymore.

“When it comes to marriage, it’s very confusing, because it’s a structure created culturally by people, and it comes with certain rules. And each person is an individual, so some rules may not work for certain people,” Xandru Grech said while being interviewed on the latest episode of Jon Mallia’s Podcast.

“I may be shocking a lot of people here but if you look at society as it is, I don’t see marriage as something that, on average, works.”

Internationally, divorce rates stand at around just over four divorces per 1,000 married people in 2022.

Malta has one of the lowest divorce rates in Europe, with the island registering just 0.5 divorces per 1,000 persons in 2022. This number actually declined from 2019, when the island saw 0.7 divorces for every 1,000 persons.

However, modernity has placed a strain on “traditional” relationships, with the rise of social media, dating apps and a generally faster pace of life all giving couples more and more reasons not to turn to marriage as the end goal of their relationships… if they even decide to go for a classic monogamous relationship.

A recent opinion poll also revealed that, for the first time in Malta’s history, an entire 10% of people identify as asexual.
