Magistrate Joe Mifsud has sent a message to his fellow Żejtun festa enthusiasts after spending a serious amount of time in hospital.

Speaking to camera while in a hospital bed and holding a book on Maltese festi, Mifsud, a magistrate known for his idiosyncratic court addresses and particular references, said he was sad to have to miss the festa celebrations in Żejtun, but had no doubt they would be spectacular.

“This year I won’t be with you, and I really wanted to be with you after these last two years,” Mifsud said from hospital, addressing Beland festa organisers and enthusiasts in reference to the festa of Santa Katarina. Mifsud is an honourary member of this band club.

“Today is the 133rd day I’ve been in hospital. They’ve kept me informed on the preparations you’ve done and I know there’s going to be a good festival, and the Beland club has organised a great programme.

He thanked the society for showing him “so much respect” and said he wanted to show respect in kind.

Mifsud went on to tell enthusiasts to enjoy the festa celebrations and fireworks, but to not forget about who the festa was dedicated to – Santa Katarina.

Members of the public sent messages of support after the video was published to Beland’s social media.

“Support to this giant of a magistrate, I’m referring to the great Joe Mifsud. We can’t wait to see you back where you belong as you’ve always been there for real justice,” Anton Cutajar, a prominent zookeeper, posted publicly.
